Autism/Aspergers services
« on: August 13, 2012, 08:05:39 PM »
Hi all, my name is Stacey and I have a (nearly) five year old son diagnosed with Aspergers syndrome. I have lived in England before so I am familiar with the basics of registering with a GP, etc.

I am wondering if anyone has any specific experience getting autism related services through either the school or through the GPs?  We will be returning to England in March 2013 (NE England: Teesside) and would appreciate of any advice!

He currently receives weekly Occupational, Speech and ABA therapies.

Thanks,
Stacey

Services will be based on what the local authority provides and it is likely to vary from other experiences you may hear about in the UK.

Access to these services are generally through school but run by the health service. Your son will need to go through the SEN statementing process to be considered for additional services and/or a special provision/school if necessary.

In my London borough, GPs refer to the community paediatrician who can provide more specialist monitoring or advice.

There may also be community services for autism so it would be good to check with the local authority for information.

OT and SLT are common. ABA is popular and I know parents who pay for private therapists or access ABA schools.

Hi Stacey :)

You may want to check out these as well (if you haven't already!). They are a national charity who can offer support and advice about services in your area. http://www.autism.org.uk/

There are also Carers services/centres in local areas that can provide support to carers (caregivers)/parents etc - I used to work in one and used to facilitate a support and advice group for parents of people who had Aspergers/Autism :)
