Pittsburgh to Derby? Sure... Why not...
« on: July 10, 2012, 02:10:41 AM »
Hello, all...

First, I have to share that I'm so glad I found this site now.  I hadn't really thought much about my impending move until recently and the support and info is very welcome - thanks!

I'm moving from Pittsburgh to Derby asap - T2 ICT visa is in the works, going over to find a place in a couple weeks.  I've "sort of" lived in London for a while before just like I'm "sort of" moving from Pittsburgh.  The reality is that I spend the last 5 years travelling globally for work like a nomad and didn't really have a home base.  I came back to the States on a more consistent basis earlier this year and I've had cabin fever ever since.  After 6 months of applying for

So, why do I want to relocate to the UK?  I've spent A LOT of time in the UK, but mostly in London, Durham/New Castle and Cambridge.  So, I feel like Derby may be a new experience.  For the last year or so, I had been flying to London from wherever I happened to be every other weekend to visit my fiancĂ©e, before she came to the States for a few months to relax and do wedding planning things.  She's English; we met working together at our company's London office.  She recently moved home to Durham and we well...  we decided not to get married and also go our separate ways, again "sort of".  Since we're buddies now (ha...) and she's pregnant with our first child (due Dec) I decided to still move over.  I'm super stoked to be a dad and her and I will surely be great parents, even if we're not together.  It's all a little crazy at the moment.

So... yeah.  That's my story.  Oh, I work in aerospace/defence (hence Derby, but not for RR), I'm 28 and I tend to make life exciting...  ;)

Thanks in advance for all of the info I hope to find on this site!

As a Philly girl, not sure if I'm allowed to welcome someone with the name "Steelers6" onto the board, but I'll try  ;)

Derby sounds like it will be an exciting new challenge ( if only for remembering to pronounce it correctly all the time ) but not as much as becoming a dad!

Congrats and welcome to UKY!

Hiya!

I'm Kelly and I'm 26. I live in Coalville (not far from Derby) and I have a little girl who will be 2 in October with my British husband. I've lived here for going on 6 years now. From North Dakota originally, and I do miss home so much sometimes! Just talking with another American is enough to curb the homesickness for awhile.

There seem to be quite a few Americans on UK Yankee that are around the Derby/Nottingham area!

Congrats on the baby!! I'm sure you'll do great!

Kelly

Wow a move and a new location and a new baby! I've been in Derby since about Feb and unfortunately take the bus just about everywhere while the hubby is working but I find there is plenty to do. Hopefully you get all you need from this site. I've talked to a lot of Americans here so far and everyone seems really nice.

Good luck the next few months!
