US Background Check Recommended for UK Employment?
« on: August 23, 2012, 04:41:20 AM »
Hi All,

I'm moving to the UK on a Spouse Visa in three weeks.

Should I get a printed copy of a background check of myself to bring with me to show potential employers if they ask? How necessary would you say doing this is?

If so, will a New Jersey background check suffice? Or should I look into getting a statewide check? I've lived in New Jersey my whole, but I'm not sure if that matters in this circumstance.

Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Usually it depends on what job you are doing. For example, if you are going to work in social work/social care with vulnerable children or adults, the employer usually wants you to have an overseas background check.

I don't think that a state background check would be sufficient, it usually has to come from the FBI, which involves getting fingerprinted. These do take a long time to process. I sent mine off about a month ago and my credit card was charged this past Tuesday.

Again, this all depends on your employer and in what field you are working.

Seconded.

The FBI check is what most people here who have needed a stateside check have used.

YMMV of course. I've was CRBed two times in the first two years I was here and no one asked for a US background check. BUt I had a friend who needed the US check to work for YHA.

If it isn't too expensive it might be worth having it at hand.
