Car Insurance
« on: August 14, 2012, 09:28:47 AM »
Lord amighty - I just passed my driving test. I'm not joking when I say that childbirth may have been a less stressful experience.

Does anyone have any recent experience in getting a good deal on car insurance? I have had a US driver's license for 12 years with no claims - I'd like to lean on that if possible. We're in Scotland, if that makes a difference.

Thanks in advance.

Broken record advice:  Contact an insurance broker.   You likely will not be able to use your no claims (I've heard international no claims aren't accepted by any company anymore), but they'll save you the looking around and can sometimes get better deals than you can get yourself.

What I usually do is try to get quotes online via compare websites as well as other companies that don't show up on compare websites. Then whichever is cheapest, I call and try to haggle it down further.

I've tried insurance brokers in the past (so many of them!) and they never got me a better deal than I was able to get by trying the above so it works for me.

Insurance brokers were useless for me, I got Aviva last year and they counted my no claims from the US (I had each former insurance company in US email me letters) and my driving history from the States. I'm just about to renew next week and my insurance actually went down about £70 and is quite cheap. Best thing to do is get a quote online from them then give a call to verify US stuff.
