Chicago/Las Vegas to Canary Wharf Area
« on: October 05, 2012, 01:35:37 PM »
Happy Friday everyone!  I am a Chicago/Las Vegas hybrid girl who just moved to London to be with her handsome British hubby.  I grew up in Vegas (and was living with my parents for seven weeks while waiting for my spousal visa to arrive), but worked in Chicago for the past nine years as an attorney.  I am looking forward to seeing everything that London has to offer, while hoping to meet fellow expats who are experiencing or who have experienced the same exciting/nervous/inquisitive feelings that I currently have while adjusting to my new country of residence.  On an equally important note, I would love to find a bar that shows the Chicago Bears games as well.  :)  Thank you for all the wonderful posts in this forum - I could not ask for better information!

Hi Bri Bri!  I am brand new to this forum and this is my first post.  I'm marrying my British love on Nov 13.  We'll have a wait until I get my spouse visa, but I'm hoping to be back in the UK by Valentines day.

I'm saying hello because I'm from Chicago, am getting married in vegas (where my godfather lives - he's also from Chicago) and I also attended law school although I didn't finish - (American) law wasn't for me.  (NOT a euphemism for didn't make it.  Quit a little more than halfway through 2L).  I'm thinking about picking up law studies again once I get back to England.  We live in Surrey, just outside of London, near Croyden.

Good luck, and keep in touch if you feel so inclined!

Regards,

Allie

Hi Allie!

We have definitely followed similar paths in our journey across the pond!  :)  We were also married in Vegas!  The marriage certificate process was incredibly easy, and we were able to obtain our marriage certificate quite quickly after the wedding ceremony.

Where do you live in Chicago?  I lived in Lakeview and Roscoe Village.  I really miss my friends and the friendly faces I would see every day, but I won't miss the freezing cold temperatures.  Oh, and I miss the Chicago Cubs too, although they are awful this year.

Anyway, I wish you the best of luck with your wedding and the visa process!  As an FYI, my visa was granted within 14 business days, which was surprisingly quick given the current backlog.  You should definitely be in the UK by Valentine's Day (and even by Christmas if you're aiming for that).

Please keep in touch and good luck!!!

You won't find a bar showing all the Chicago Bear games, being in London though you will find some bars that show the Sky Sports coverage of NFL on a Sunday evening, 2 games but varies who they show.
If you specifically must see the Bears then you can sign up to NFL website to watch them online. I think it's about £70 for just 1 team. The Sky games are blacked out though so on the occasions it is the Bears being shown you'd need access to Sky Sports.

Thanks for the heads up TykeMan!  I found the beautiful restaurant known as Bodeans, and I have been able to catch a few baseball games there.  I'll look into the Sky option too!  There's just something about hearing the familiar sounds of baseball and American football in the background that makes me feel at home.  Thankfully I'm getting used to the sounds of football too.  :)
