Time To Say Goodbye...
« on: August 31, 2012, 05:45:44 PM »
Well after nearly three and a half years of living in Northern Ireland, I'm afraid it's nearly time to say goodbye to the UK  :-\\\\ My partner and I are moving to France in 11 days and it's going to be a completely new adventure.  I have thoroughly enjoyed my time here and it's rather bittersweet because I've made a lot of great friends and learned so much about a different culture.
I've figured out how to drive on the other side of the road, and somewhat mastered roundabouts.
I now am a huge fan of a good fry up, something I'll probably not find too easily in Paris.
Sunday roasts, walking absolutely everywhere, getting that muddled accent, becoming more and more pale, not being able to sleep during the summer mornings because it's bright at 5am, learning new terms like "pay as you go," "scundered," and "craic" have all been things that have enriched my life.
Having lived in another country has definitely been a huge positive for me and I wouldn't trade it for anything.  I'd highly recommend it!
And who knows if we'll be back one day.  I kinda hope so because I've made a lot of friends here and as I say goodbye to everyone, it's amazing how many people I know.  The greengrocer, my barber, regulars at the cafes on the road, even the workers at the Mace around the corner are all a part of my life here and it will be odd not seeing them all the time.
Of course I'd like to give a big thank you to everyone on UK-Yankee for being a source of advice and entertainment!  I'll say this: there aren't many French-US forums that even begin to compare to this one!  Hopefully one day I can pop back up and say "hello! I'm back!" but until then I wish everyone all the very best!

You don't have to go from the boards Daniel! We had a lady living in France who kept in touch on the board for a long while.

Good luck with your new adventures!!!  :)

They sure do lol!  Best of luck to you, Daniel, and I hope you pop back on the boards now and again to say hi!

I was thinking the same thing! ;D

Good luck Daniel. What's got you moving to France (if you don't mind)? And where in Paris will you be? I loooooooove Paris. It's an amazing city and really, you can do all the things you mentioned there, too! I'm rather jealous! I miss Paris a lot. Say hi to the Jardin du Luxembourg for me. ;) Bonne chance!

Best of luck Daniel!  Disappointing that I'm just learning about you now-- I've been in Belf for a year now and would have loved a Yank to meet up with.. Gutted.

Norn Iron slang is definitely something that I'd miss if I left too.  They just manage to have words for feelings that you never thought you'd be able to describe! :)

All the best to you, and if you come back to Belfast any time soon I'd love to meet up!

My partner Patrick is an actor/director/writer here and he's gotten accepted to an awesome acting school there, so I'm following.  We both met there nearly 4 years ago so we always wanted to move and now we've got our chance!
Paris is a city that has always been in my heart and I am a complete francophile!  Hopefully I'll be able to find work as a pastry chef fairly soon after arriving and sorting out my carte de sejour.  But one day the plan may be to return to Belfast and open a proper patisserie, which is something that this city DESPERATELY needs!  We aren't sure how long we'll be staying, but it's at least 2 years.  Leaving the time after that pretty open so who knows!

Brittany, are you on Facebook?  There is a NI expats page... do a search for "American Expats in Belfast".  There are folks from all over Northern Ireland on there, but the vast majority are in and around Belfast.

Ooooh Daniel, I love your patisserie idea!  IF you do that, you must expand to the northwest also lol!

Good luck Daniel and Patrick....I'm sure we wouldn't mind reading your exploits as an ex-ex-pat in France!
