What do you recommend on Sky?
« on: September 29, 2012, 11:36:35 AM »
I am not much of a TV watcher in general but R and I are moving back into his old flat next month and along with this comes Sky.

I have lived in the UK for 6.5 years with only Freeview, so 5 gazillion channels feels a bit overwhelming. Help please!

What are you watching/ what have I been missing and where do I find it?

 :D

I do not have Sky yet (getting it next month), but my husband and I did a house-sitting job for his boss while she was on vacation, and she had Sky. I don't know what channels are good or anything, and I tend to think a lot of the programs here are, as they say, naff. But, you said you aren't much of a television watcher in general, so some of my favorites that are on TV are:

-Jeremy Kyle (it's fun to watch him yell at scummy people; it's like a Jerry Springer type of show. Conflict resolution/confrontation show)
-Hell's Kitchen (it's fun to watch him yell at bad chefs. Basically a reality show where aspiring cooks compete in cooking competitions and dinner services. Last one standing gets a prize of some sort)
-Dragon's Den (Inventors/product designers/business people pitch their products and businesses to five investors, who grill the pitchers and decide whether or not to invest or not)
-Three in a Bed (Three couples or individuals who each own their own bed and breakfast spend a day staying at the other couples' bed and breakfasts. The bed and breakfast that earns the most money from the competition wins)

Yes, it's true, all of these suggestions are reality shows. I didn't realize how much I liked reality TV until I moved here. It seems like anything that isn't reality TV over here is either Doctor Who, a singing competition, or a soap opera. Yes, I do believe British television sucks cuss word.

However, with all this said, Sky is GREAT for films. They seem to really show a lot of them, and after a movie has aired, it goes to a section called "Sky Anytime" (this is what my husband is telling me). Here, you are able to watch any movie they've aired recently. And during my time of house-sitting, there were A TON of them. Really good ones, too. It had a great mix of old movies and new ones.

So even if you aren't much of a television watcher, consider yourself lucky. I was very impressed with Sky. 1000 times better than BT Vision, which is what I have now.

True Blood just restarted.  Boardwalk Empire started this week.  I just started watching Continuum, which just started this week as well. Supernatural is in mid-season.  The Daily Show.

I could go on.  ;)

I highly recommend the Newsroom! Although, I think the first season just finished...

Yes it has, I love it, DW not so bothered.

The brother of a friend of mine has been hired as a scriptwriter on the next series! So I am 3 degrees of separation from Aaron Sorkin (you can now claim you are 4!)

Homeland series 2 just started (but that's Channel 4)

It depends on what genre of shows you like? Do you like comedy? Drama? Thrillers? Reality? Etc. is it just the basic sky or are you getting the movie channel with it?

I like some of the reality shows and competition show's like "Come Dine with Me" or like the UK version of "Cops" (they have a few actually that are interesting), they play a lot of the American shows like CSI, Criminal Minds, How I met your mother, Big Bang Theory, etc. I do love how there are a bit more documentaries on people here like when they were doing the series on Kate, the girl who had the acid thrown in her face, or now it's the group of people with tourette's and how music and other hobbies are therapeutic, etc. Really neat stories! But mostly American sitcoms and drama tv!  (In fact, I'm pretty sure 90% of what's on there IS American shows! LOL!)

There is a range of selection but I still somehow find it easy to still say "100 and something channels and there's STILL nothing on!" LOL!

DW likes old movies so enjoys TCM and Sky Movies Classic.

She's also hooked on Time Team and Come Dine With Me...she'll watch 5 or 6 back to back. I joked that they should do a colaboration between the 2 programmes!

Sorry, lost track of my own thread!  [smiley=blush.gif]

I tend to like dramas, documentaries and news stuff. Reality shows do very little for me with the exception of Come Dine with Me.  ;D Comedy is a tough category as I was never a fan of most US comedies, but I do like some Brit stuff. I'm a Monty Python-Father Ted style fan. I don't like Little Britain or Keeping up Appearances type stuff.

I only have the entertainment package and was really annoyed when I tried to record the first presidential debates only to come back to a screen telling me PBS is not part of my package. :(

So I'm still trying to figure it out and all suggestions are appreciated.  :D
