Renting a car in the US as a non-US resident
« on: November 14, 2012, 10:36:38 AM »
Hi guys,

I'm new here but I've been lurking for a while. I'm actually British but my fiancee, who lives with me in the UK, is American (I should get her to join too really as she'd find it useful)

Anyway, this is a strange question but I was curious to see if anyone has been in the same position. This weekend we're going back to South Carolina to visit her family and get our wedding plans underway. I've rented a car and I'll be using my UK drivers license to pick it up. I'm allowed to have an extra driver, but we're unsure as to whether my fiancee can actually drive. She got ILR a couple of months ago and has had a UK license for just over a year, but they require 2 years on a UK license to drive it. However, she does have a South Carolina license, but I'm not sure you can use it if you aren't a resident there anymore, even for rentals.

Does anyone know what the deal is? I'm fairly sure when I ask the rental company they won't have a clue so I might just play it safe and be the only driver.

Thanks  :)

I think it would be wise for you to be the sole driver until your fiancee has had a UK DL for 2 years or more.

Although the car rental company would accept the US DL it is probably invalid, and this would, in turn, invalidate your auto insurance.

That's what I'm thinking Fruitgum - DialAFlight have told me it should be fine and the car rental people may say the same but I'm not trusting it. Neither of them are knowledgable about immigration status!

Thanks for your reply.
