How much duty?
« on: November 20, 2012, 02:20:35 AM »
I'm in the States for Thanksgiving (yay!) and my aunt has offered us three 1 litre bottles of scotch to take back home to the UK. I understand that we can each take 1 litre duty free with us, but what about the third? I would just leave it here and pick it up for the next trip, which I still may do, but I don't know when we might get to come back to the States.

We will have the following for alcohol (assuming we bring everything back):
3 - 1 litre bottles scotch (around 40%)
1 bottle of still white wine (12% I believe)

I also have a mostly full 75cl bottle of Glenlivet (40%) that I'd like to bring back as well if possible (in a vacuum seal bag in the event of a spill).

Can someone please break down the duty/customs/VAT that will be charged if we take all of this back with us please? I've read through the HM Revenue & Customs website, but I still can't figure out how the rates are figured for our exact case.

Thank you!
Emily

This link explains your liability for duty:

VAT is a standard 20%, from a quick scan of the details it doesn't appear that you would owe Customs Duty as the value of goods is below 630 UK pounds, and the alcohol duty rates are in this link:

Forgot to include the fact that we are flying into the UK from Amsterdam officially. Does that make a difference?

Flying from Amsterdam into Norwich.
