UK --> UK Voltage for Pump & Monitor
« on: December 04, 2012, 09:23:32 AM »
Hopefully last question... I have a Medela Swing Breast Pump and a BT 150 Baby Monitor.  I would love to bring both these items with me to the US.

Looking at the monitor user guide, it says "if travelling abroad, make sure that the voltage shown on the mains power adapter corresponds to the local mains power before connection to the power supply."  Looking on the back of both units, they say "DC7.5V, 500mA".  What does this mean?  Can I use in the US with just a plug adapter?  (the only reason I want to bring this is that there's a song that Little Man will very quickly fall asleep to.  we've tried different or no music, and he doesn't settle as well.  a bad habit, I know)

The Breast Pump is a bit more complicated, as its a motor. This user guide states "make sure voltage of power cord is compatible with voltage of power supply".  I do have a manual pump as well... so if I have to use, not huge deal.

Any guidance for a numpty would be lovely.

I don't know how to help re voltage, but I found when I went to the states and I was pumping, it was less stressful for me to take a handheld pump and rent a big one while I was there. I contacted a local lactation consultant and she rented me a symphony for two weeks.  Also, Medela have offices in the UK and they can probably help you.

And this is just me....but rather than lugging a baby monitor all the way there, I found it easier for my mother to buy an inexpensive on and use it there. If you a travelling with a baby, it's a good idea to travel as lightly as possible.  When I travelled with my kids when they were infants, I put a message out on Facebook that I was looking to borrow some baby stuff and people were jumping out of th woodwork with offers of stuff. You can buy a baby monitor at Target for like $20.  Also, just another thought, I also bought an inexpensive car seat and I leave it at my parents house for my trips to the states, as UK car seats are illegal to use in the USA, it's just easier and worth the money. Good luck!

Can you just buy a US power cord from Medela? Maybe call their customer service and ask?

I tried my Medela on batteries while at home and it was rubbish. I'd call Medela to ask about a new power cord, that seems the best option. Or could you sell it and buy a new one when you are at home? :) Good luck!

Thanks ladies, never even thought about a new power cord.  Can get one for about $10.  Problem solved!

Thanks for the offer.  Do you want to sell the cord?

I was going to take it home and offer it on Craigslist or something- haven't really thought about it to be honest.  Where are/ will you be traveling? If you want to just pay for the postage to borrow it that'd be fine with me.  PM if you want and we can figure something out.
