US Check Depositing
« on: December 08, 2012, 09:15:05 PM »
Hi all

I have a quick question.  I have 2 checks coming from my American University.  They are $500 and $2775, I will be depositing them into my Santander account.  How long will they take to become available?  How much do they charge?  Unfortunately, I no longer have an American account, so I couldn't deposit them into there.

Any help?

Kat

I deposited a couple of 12k checks back in the day, and they took about two weeks. I use Lloyds but found their fees to be really reasonable--I can't remember what they were anymore but I believe they were less than £50.

I just deposited my final paychecks from my job in the US yesterday...   I bank with HSBC now.  Was told the checks would take 2-3 weeks to clear, and the fees would be anywhere from £12-£28 per check depending on how they chose to chase down the funds (which is decided by someone further upstream, I guess, and the branches have nothing to do with it).  I imagine Santander would try to remain fairly competitive with the others.

I deposited a check for about $400 into my Natwest account a couple of years ago and it cost £8, I think. They told me it could take up to 28 days to clear, but the money was deposited in my account within a week or so. Looking at the current rates on the Natwest website, they charge £10 for checks of £100 to £5,000, £30 for checks £5,000 to £20,000 and £60 for checks over £20,000.

You'd have to check the rates that Santander charge for depositing the checks - I've had a quick look on their website, but it looks a bit confusing because the length of time it takes and the charges depend on how they actually process the checks. See here for info.

Well I just deposited $450 and $2775 respectively.  With Santander they cost £10 per check to process, was in my account immediately, and will be available to me within 6 days.  Not bad overall.  I was expecting much worse!  Thank you all for your help!
