How long does it take to get your US passport amended
« on: May 30, 2005, 08:26:10 AM »
with your new name. I'm getting married 11 June, then off to Liverpool on the 14th to get my LTR, which will have my maiden name, because I won't have had time to change it. My fiance and I will then be driving around Britain for the rest of the week as a sort of honeymoon.

I've already registered with an employment agency. They've got a copy of my passport with the fiance visa that says "no work", and I said that when I get back from my honeymoon I would show them the passport that has the LTR and allows me to work.  They have already sent my CV out to jobs.

I was wondering if I send my passport off to the US embassy to get my married name change, how long it would take?I don't want to be in limbo, unable to work because the prospective employer needs to see my LTR stamp.  I also don't like the idea of not having any photo ID at all for a certain amount of time. I won't even be able to get my packages at the post office.

Is it a simple process of mailing the passport and getting it right back, or does it get held for a while because of bureaucracy?

You don't have to get your passport amended to reflect your married name at all if you don't want to.  So, you could apply for your FLR/LLR, show your new stamp to your prospective employer, and then send your passport away for the name change.  I personally would wait until I found a job, show them the stamp, and then send in for the name change.

I'm definitely applying for LLR in my maiden name. I'm applying just 3 days after my wedding.  I was just concerned about waiting till I get a job, since I don't know how long it will take me to find a permanent job.  I thought I had to do the US name change stuff  (passport and social security card) first, since  I will have to report my UK income to the IRS, so my UK paystubs, bank account, etc. will have to match the name on my social security card.

I realize that it's not about what other people think, but I feel a bit odd about changing my name legally months after I've already been married.

Waiting till I get a permanent job is a good idea though.

But I'd still like to know how long the process takes.  I know it shouldn't be difficult; the person on the other end just has to read a form and look at my marriage certificate,  but it is a bureaucracy.

As long as your social security number is associated with the same name on your payslips, you'll be fine.  I started working here in June 2004 (under my married name -- was never asked for any proof of the name change) and didn't change the name on my SS card until December 04 -- waited to do it in person in the US because I didn't want to send my passport to the embassy over here.  I won't change the name in my passport until it's due for renewal in 2008.

I read on the US Embassy website it takes about 4 days if you send it to London for just a name change.  I am just sending in my passport tomorrow so I can report back.  They say to enclose a return special delivery envelope as well so they can send it right back.  The address and form are on the US Embassy Londons website.

However I am confused, What is the LLR?  I just got married June 4th and I'm under the assumption that the FLR is the form to file, what is the difference?  I thought you had to do the FLR first for a 2 years period and then file the other one...

LLR = FLR.
