Uhmm, passport problem? Name?
« on: December 13, 2012, 11:59:59 PM »
I just received my new passport, and my last name is McKie, they sure got that part, but put it as Mc Kie, with a space... is this going to screw up anything else later on down the pipeline? I'm getting documents together for the spouse visa,, and I don't want to be turned away because of a space in my name :(
I'll follow you, no matter where you go, what you do, just hold my hand, and lead me through. I need your guidance, I need your strength. I won't protest,, I won't complain..

I'd get it fixed. They must tell you what to do in case of an error.

It's pretty important to have your name *exactly correct* on your passport.

Always.

It is a legal document.

Married 04/13/11, in NYC.
Applied for Spouse Visa the following week, with express service, and I was approved 4 days later!
Arrived in the UK 05/20/11.
I took the stupid LIUK Test Oct. 2012.
We were granted ILR In Person in Croydon on 04/23/13.
Got BRP 2 days later, in mail box - it just appeared.

Grrr... Pretty peeved atm, but I thought the exact same way. Why bother skirting the issue, because as sure as I'm standing here, if I tried to get in the same way as my husband they would see the difference and would cause more problems. No thanks -_- Thanks for the replies guys, I really appreciate it.

Well, I took it to a passport agent, and he said it should be fine. Anyone elses thoughts?

Can you press it at all with them?  Explain that while it may be fine for the passport agency, it is also your legal ID, and you will be turned away from some places in the UK for not having your name in exactly the same format as is on your legal ID. I'd maybe say, they may say it is fine, but it isn't your name, and it was their error, so they should fix it.

I imagine most places would be fine with you spelling your name the right way even if they don't fix it, but there are some who like to be sticklers with the proverbial stick up . . .

Yes, I told them specifically I would be traveling to the UK, and that they're pretty strict about how things look and go, and he still told me, "Your passport should be fine for travel, it's only a small mistake so there shouldn't be a need to replace it."

I really didn't know anything else to say because he was just really pushy about it all and telling me that its fine.

What agent did you go through? Is there a supervisor you could ask to speak to?  For instance I did mine at a Post Office and if I'd had that problem I'd have asked to speak to the postmaster.

I love the "it's only a small error."  How silly is that?  If they acknowledge it's an error.  It's an error!

Don't worry, I don't think it's an error. Read here:

http://www.us-passport-service-guide.com/should-there-be-a-space-after-the-mc-of-my-last-name-in-my-passport.html

And here:

http://boards.bootsnall.com/passport-exact-name-spelling-t43370.html

Seems to be standard on US passports - if you have a name with a prefix like Mc, they put a space in it when it's put into block capitals. If you think about it, it's just as valid as MCKIE, which could be written in lower case as Mckie - equally "wrong"!

My wife has the same and she just got her ILR. It's never been a problem for her, even though all her other documents had no space in them. The Home Office must know about it.
