Leaving the family behind
« on: January 20, 2013, 09:45:45 PM »
Has anyone here with a spouse and children gone to study in the UK without the spouse/children, at least for the first year?

This is something I'm actually considering doing, but I'd love to know if anyone has been in the same boat.  We have several reasons the family might not join me until Year 2.  One is financial--I'm not sure we'd be able to show the necessary funds for dependent visas for a spouse and two kids by the 2013-2014 school year (whereas I'd hope we could save and have enough the following year).  The other reasons include that my husband has a decent job here and next year the children will both being going to school right next to his place of work, so very convenient for childcare--ideal, actually.

Naturally, I'd love for us all to go together, if possible, but . . . it might be nice for me to have a foot in the door, have already gotten adjusted, be there to find a suitable place for the family to live, etc. ahead of time.  Not to mention lots of quiet hours in which to work on the dissertation.  I also do fairly well on my own, so I'm not too worried about the being-lonely aspect.

Has anyone you know of done this?  I haven't seen a thread on it here in the student area yet, but I'll keep searching.
