Shipping company Boston - Glasgow
« on: November 12, 2012, 08:10:44 PM »
Hi everyone

Does anyone have any recent experience using Schumacher for shipping from the US to UK? We used their UK partner, Anglo Pacific to move to the US from Scotland a couple years ago. Other than AP downplaying the probability of our container being X-rayed in US customs, the service was really good and our stuff all arrived in one piece.

I've had several companies in to estimate our volume and provide a quote: Schumacher, Sterling, Stevens and Allied. Volumes have ranged everywhere from 330 cu ft and $3100 (Schumacher) to 800 cu ft and over $7000! For the same exact stuff. So I'm finding it pretty hard to determine who has their stuff together and who doesn't know what they are doing! Schumacher is on the cheaper end of that and now I'm thinking - is it TOO cheap? Am I going to get with all kinds of hidden fees on the UK side? Are they underestimating our volume?

If anyone has any recent experience, I would love to hear about it. I read the good review of Gentle Giant on the forum here, so hoping to get them in too.

Thanks
Caitlin

Hi Caitlin.

You may have read my review of Gentle Giant.  I can't recommend them enough.  Hopefully, someone will come along with a review of Schumacher, but if you'd like to Bob Lane's contact info, PM me and I'll send it to you.

Good luck.

Hi Caitlin,

No doubt you've already moved and are likely in the UK, but I'll add my two cents for anyone searching the forums who might find this.

I used Schumacher for a move from the US to Australia and they were also a fair bit cheaper than the next quote (about $1100 cheaper if I recall). I forget the exact reason, but I believe Schumacher is cheaper because they use their own containers and ships so they don't have to go through any middleman like other shippers who have to essentially rent space (and ironically may rent that space from Schumacher).

Also, kbee and Caitlin, it would be great to capture your moving experiences for others on UK Yankee's review page: http://www.uk-yankee.com/expat-guide-uk/review-your-international-mover. [nofollow] Now through Feb 28 you'll be entered for a chance to win 100 pounds when you submit a review :)
