US Tax Question
« on: January 07, 2013, 07:09:59 PM »
Hi,

I been in UK for almost two years, applying for ILR in February.
I started working since April 2012, earn £5280 gross.
I have not file for US tax since entering UK in 2011.
As I came across all the post on US tax, I am lost and confuse.
Do I need to file tax?
If I have a joint bank account, ISA?, do I need to report it or would this cause any problem for me in terms of tax?

Help
=)

As a US citizen you will always have to file a tax return.  You won't necessarily have to pay tax in the US but you will always have to file a return.

As a US citizen you will always have to file a tax return.  You won't necessarily have to pay tax in the US but you will always have to file a return.
Not exactly correct - ou must file each year that your income is above the limit for your filing status (single, married or head of household). See: http://www.irs.gov/uac/Do-I-have-to-File-a-Tax-Return%3F

You would also choose to file if you due a refund such up to $1,000 per child in tax credits.

You must also file an FBAR if required and probably must file each year from 2012 onwards if you own any PFICs at all (see Form 8621).

I suggest you start by reading the very well written section on the London Embassy website:

Hi everyone,  I haven't worked since last year then I quit in May due to being accepted for the fiancee visa and I knew I would need to do my tax returns for last year. Would it be recommended to either claim foreign tax credit or just go for the itemize deductions?

If I decide to do the free file, I know they do refunds electronically and I no longer have a bank account, but my husband does and is it possible for them to do the deposit in his account even though I'm filing as married filing separately?

I appreciate the help!

The IRS provide some GREAT information for free here:
http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p4732.pdf
http://london.usembassy.gov/irs/index.html

Does this answer your questions?

You'll be filing Married Filing Separate unless your husband is a citizen or green card holder. If you file on paper it is free to file; the IRS charges nothing.
