Need help figuring out a fun day for my soon-to-be niece!
« on: February 09, 2013, 07:37:15 PM »
My fiance's niece just grabbed his phone and started texting me. In short, we have a plan that when I come and visit next month, the three of us will go out. Apparently she's never asked him to go out with her before so clearly she wants to hang out with both of us. My own niece and nephew are 5 and 2 and she is almost 14 so I have NO idea what types of things she might like to do. All I can think of is maybe a trip to the mall and some lunch after. I can't remember what I use to do 10 years ago! and I want  to make sure she has a good time as I'm obviously super new to the family and want to make a good impression (especially because this will only be the second time i'll have spent time with his family).

HEEELLPPP I need suggestions! I know there are threads for people with kids looking for things to do but as I won't have that type of relationship with her, I'm not sure this question would really fit in there...I want to be the fun new aunt from america that isn't too old and doesnt treat her too much like a child or something.

My, how time flies....

Fourteen can be a tough age. Is she a "young" 14, or 14-going-on-21?  Can you get any idea at all from your fiance as to what type of gal she is? (girly, trendy, sporty, studious, etc.) or anything in particular she might interested in?

Also, in what part of the country will you be?

I just re-read your post. You can't remember what you used to do *10* years ago. Good Lord I feel OLD now. ; )

Well, she was an American girl, raised on promises.
She couldn't help thinking that there was a little more to life, somewhere else.
After all it was a great big world, with lots of places to run to.
And if she had to die trying she had one little promise she was gonna keep.

He doesn't really know, he just thinks all 14 year olds are the same haha ;) From what I've gathered thus far it's definitely the 14 going on 21 type situation which is why I don't want to treat her like a child but I also don't want to attempt to do something with her that she might find boring. I'm not new to being an aunt but I'm new to being an aunt of someone in their teens heh.  We'll be in the South East. (Reading area to be specific).

hah Wellll I feel old trying to think back to what I did as a young teenager.... :P

Well, you could do a day trip to London as it is an easy train journey from Reading. Maybe do something touristy in the morning, then spend the afternoon at Selfridges getting mani/pedis. Yeah, if I were 14 I'd be up for mani/pedis.

Or you could go bowling. Allows you time to get to know her and also involves the boy.

Another thought is you could just ask her what she likes to do, after all she's the local, why not let her steer the day's activities and let her show you her favourite things to do?

London would be cool BUT expensive and me and the boy are already doing a trip into London for dinner, drinks and a concert with potentially a second trip in for a few other things I wanted to do. As I remember, train tickets are the killer money wise :/

That is a good idea about bowling. I didn't even think about that. I did ask but by the time I had, she had given the phone back to him lol.

I thought of mani/pedis as well but didn't think your fiance would want to wait around.

Dels has a great idea, to ask her where all the cool/happening places and shops are. (Can you tell I'm really old now?) She'd probably love it if *she* can be the tour guide.

Yeahh the mani/pedi idea was great! for the two of us. I want to include my fiance though as he'll have to drive us around and it'll be nice to have him there just in case. makes me feel a bit more confident  ;)

What? Men can get mani/pedis too! They just don't need to get polish. I'd recommend him get just the pedicure - feet massaged and pumiced - it's a luxury! And I bet your niece would find it totes amusing  :P.

I have a few suggestions  :) :

1. Windsor Castle - http://www.royalcollection.org.uk/visit/windsorcastle
2. Thorpe Park - http://www.thorpepark.com/
3. Cinema & Shopping - http://www.theoracle.com/

2009 - Fiancée visa, moved to London
Married at register office, FLR(M) issued
2011 - Life in UK test passed, ILR granted
2012 - British Citizenship approved
