companies for UK to US move??
« on: March 07, 2013, 11:31:05 PM »
Can anyone recommend any companies for a UK to US move? My husband's new job comes with a moving allowance and we're trying to get some quotes to get an idea of how much to ask for as the negotiations are happening. We don't intend to move any furniture or big electronic items, so we're mostly looking at just moving boxes of clothes, books, and toys/baby items--though we have amassed quite a bit in our 4 years here. Is there anyone who has done a similar move who can tell me around what you spent?

When moving from London to LA, we used a US broker, Southern Winds, who took care of booking all the companies for us. We did send sofa, bed and mattress back and a bunch of boxes totaling 250 cubic feet, and that cost $2400, including door to door/packing/unpacking and $20k of insurance. To give you an idea on cost w/o furniture, when we moved to London the year before, same company, 100 cf incl insurance: $1700.

We loved Southern Winds, however we had problems with the company they booked out of the UK, Simpsons Removals - they caused all sorts of damage due to bad packing. But good news is that the insurance works. Maybe if you pack everything yourself it will be better.

Definitely get a few quotes yourself, as cost really depends on where you are shipping to. movingscam.com is a great resource.

Thank you, that's really helpful to hear about your experience! Just received a quote for moving 30 boxes for 800 pounds, which includes packing and unpacking, I believe. That seems to be about the minimum charge, as moving 20 boxes was going to be not much less than that!

Did the company you got the quote from tell you approx how many cubic feet that is? Then you can take that number and use it to get quotes from other companies.

Btw, our company wasn't the cheapest either, we had much lower quotes, but decided not to go with the cheapest as it seemed too good to be true!

They didn't tell us but did tell us the size of the boxes so we could do some calculations and come up with that. I feel similar about not going with the lowest price (especially since the move is being paid for!)
