Pot Roast
« on: February 23, 2013, 11:27:03 AM »
So I attempted to make my first pot roast in the Uk the other day.. lol well.. Even though it was decent.... I did not like it lol.

For one I always use lipton onion soup mix in mines. Since they do not sell it here I ended up using this casserole thingy type season... Not the same in my opinion. lol As soon as i tasted it I asked my mom to send me a few boxes of Lipton  (her care package list gets longer by the day!)

Also i guess the store did not have the cut of meat i asked for because they sent a substitute. .... So i will attempt to make it again... sometime soon

Seriously I find cooking here to be an adventure. I am starting  to come up with the half American/Half british recipes as i look for things they might not have here. I knew it would be different but even i am surprised sometimes.... I am getting a kick out of it myself

That happened to me on my first attempt. I went to the local butcher and told them what I wanted it for -- in advance as we were having people over. So when I went to pick it up they didn't have it and fobbed me off with something else.  >:(

Knorr = Lipton
I think everything is being rebranded Knorr from Lipton.

I don't really understand the use of powdered soup in cooking o_O I assume it's something you need to have grown up with.

I don't think they have the onion soup, the french onion definitely.

lol your right it is something i grew up on... all my aunties and mom use is the soup mix... lol I do not use the whole package usually though. I usually use about half  or so...

I also found the pot roast to be more watery than I like it to be by using that casserole mix from here.

It's kind of like using a dry spice rub, or a dry spice packet poured into a stew or something.  This stuff is actually pretty nice... just bought some in Lupe Pintos today!  :)

Have you ever tried making your own onion soup mix?

One recipe = 1 pack of onion soup mix
Enough low sodium beef bullion for 20-24 fluid ounces
2 tsp dried parsley
1 tbsp dried onion flakes
1 tsp onion granules
1/2 tsp garlic granules
2 tsp dried celery or 1/4 tsp celery seed (I'm sure you could use fresh celery, but I haven't a clue as to how much)

These are US measurements as well.

Hope this helps!
