The process has been speeding up recently, if that helps. The average time seems to be a little over three months (my ILR visa was approved in 3 months and 1 week), though it really depends where in the queue you end up. It's something to think about, the in-person fee is pretty steep.
It is difficult to speak adequately, or justly, of London. It is not a pleasant place; it is not agreeable, or easy, or exempt from reproach. It is only magnificent... the biggest aggregation of human life, the most complete compendium in the world.

not sure if we have an option as we go away on the 21st of June so it needs to be done before that :/

When you do it in person is it just a case of going to the office or do you need to book?

It will cost you an extra £375 to apply in person though.

A postal ILR application will cost you £1,051, but will take about 3 months for processing and an in-person application will cost you £1,426, but you should get a same-day decision and will receive your BRP and passport back within 1-2 weeks.

Be aware though that if your situation is complicated, you will not be allowed to apply in person and will have to apply by post... i.e. if you have any criminal convictions (you can't have any unspent convictions to apply for ILR anyway), any previous refused visas or entries to the UK, any illegal working or overstaying in the UK etc.

Since it doesn't sound like you are familiar with the process, you'll also want to look up other threads or on the form itself seeing what you need to send.  For instance, you will need post that proves you have both been living at the same address in the UK during the last two years. There are other things too, like bank statements, but the mail with both your names is very important, so if you haven't saved that, you'll need to be backtracking to find proof.
