Application Submitted, Biometics Done, And Now We Realize...
« on: March 19, 2013, 02:45:29 AM »
I am a U.S. citizen attempting to join my boyfriend in the U.K. using a prospective civil partnership visa.

We have the application filled out and submitted, and we just put in the biometrics, however, when we sat down to fill out Appendix 2 (which was today, his work schedule has been really hectic), we noticed that there is a section asking us to do something we don't feel very comfortable with.

Though the accommodation is perfectly suitable, and we have photographs and documentation proving that, he does have housemates. This wouldn't be a problem except that there is a section on the application for the passport numbers of his housemates. That is an extremely personal piece of information to have to ask them, so my gut reaction is to find out if they're really serious.

Does the UKBA really expect us to ask his housemates (who are in no way related to him) for their passport numbers?

I really need to have some answers to this now. My fiance is talking about moving out and into his own flat right this second (which he could feasibly do), but that would mean having to go through god-knows-what hassle in order to change the address on the application, which I'm not sure we can even do (not to mention that it's something that really seems will look fishy on the application if they see we've changed it), plus we only have two weeks to get all the evidence shipped.

I am seriously in borderline panic mode trying to figure out what to do. Please...just tell us if we can leave his housemate's passport numbers off.

I think you can leave it off.

But I'm not 100% sure...

Well...I proposed to him back in September. We are both gay. And there is a visa application option for applying as a proposed civil partner. To straight folks, it's a fiance visa.

Why wouldn't we apply for that?

Sorry, you should - of course. I was just confused as to whether you were remaining in the UK or not. I revised my post.

Lol. That's cool. I was just wondering where the magical visa option that we overlooked was at.

The passport number is just an extremely personal piece of information though...I mean I might as well ask for an account number and a social security card. There is so much identity theft that could occur with that number, and anybody with two brain cells rubbing together knows it.

It's really not something I want to have to have him ask his housemate who literally just moved in not two weeks ago.

Please...just tell us if we can leave his housemate's passport numbers off.

My dad is providing our accommodation and at the time of our application I wasn't able to find out his passport number.
In the section provided for additional information I documented the reasons for this. We were successful in our application.

What I would do if I were you though, is just ask the room mate. You have nothing to loose and he may not have the same reservations about giving it to you as you have for asking for it in the first place. :)

Thanks to both of you...

One other thing...

When we submitted the application electronically, we did not submit the extra fee for mailing, mainly because we didn't understand what it was meant for.  ::)

Does this mean I won't get my supporting documents back and just my passport? Is there any way to retroactively fix this?

Also...am I really meant to photocopy every single document that I have sitting here on a table next to me? (about 240 pages worth of stuff)?

Before I submitted our application on line I was very aware of this having to pay an extra $12 for the return of the documents but in actuality, when it came to doing it, I don't think there was an option not to so you may have paid without realizing it.
How much does it say on your receipt? The visa is $1363, so if you paid $1375, then you're fine, you paid the $12.
If I'm wrong about that and you really didn't pay the $12, all is not lost.

I didn’t pay the $12!!!

If you didn’t pay the $12 then you must send this to the UKBA if you want your documents and passport back.

You should send the payment in the form of a money order or a certified cheque (no personal cheques or cash will be accepted). Money orders should be made payable to The British Consulate General, (Los Angeles or New York) along with a letter explaining the payment and your application information (GWFnumber, date of birth, Name, mailing address, telephone and etc). The Consulate does not accept pre-paid envelopes.

I actually copied it twice!
Well, I copied the whole, entire thing for myself as a precaution, and all of the documents that I wanted returned, such as the certified copies of this and the exemplified copy of that, for the UKBA. They tell you to copy anything that you want returned or they will keep the originals.

If you want us to return your supporting documents to you, you should photocopy them and send us the photocopy as well as the original document. We will not return documents to you if they have not been photocopied.

Thanks larrabe.

Since I hadn't sent the information in yet, I just lumped the money order in with the other information in it's own neat little manilla folder with an explanation letter.

Thanks for all the help everyone! :-)
