Vegetarian rennet?
« on: July 14, 2013, 10:27:48 AM »
I want to try making homemade cheese   ;D  and I've found some recipes that are vegetarian but some call for rennet.

It seems they make vegetarian rennet, but I can't figure out where to buy it.  :)

Anyone know where I can get some?  :)  Or if a substitution would work?  :)

I know they sell it at our local health food shop, but I've just had a look and you can also buy it at Lakeland (in the shop or by post if you don't have one near you). It shouldn't be too difficult to source!

Woohoo!  Found it at Whole Foods with the gelatine/baking stuff.  :)  It's called VegeRen and looks like this:

It was less than £1.50, I think.  :)  Cheese making, here I come!  :)

For anyone else looking, I found citric acid at the chemist but I had to ask for it- they've got it behind the counter, but it does say 'for culinary use'.  That was less than £1.50, too!

Ohh, a cheese question!  Yay!  There are a few different kinds of vegetarian rennet and I do recommend getting the proper supplies for the best results.

I recommend Moorlands which has a great online shop for the home cheese maker.  Here is a link to their site (the rennet page): http://www.cheesemaking.co.uk/cheese-making-rennet.  60ml of the liquid vegetarian rennet would be a good choice (not the tablets, they are hard to work with in small batches).  Keep rennet in the fridge, ideally at no more than 4C.

Please really feel free to reach out if you have other questions.  I am a professional cheese maker and love to help out anyone on the path to making cheese at home since so many people helped me out!!

PS- There is also a great forum for hobby cheese makers you can find here: http://cheeseforum.org/forum/index.php

Have fun!!
