Wish me luck...
« on: May 02, 2013, 05:07:21 PM »
I am about to go take my Theory test for driving tonight. I am a bit nervous about the hazard perception test because my bifocals make it hard to watch the video on the computer!

How did it go?  I'm taking mine on the 16th!  :)

I passed the theory test last night at 6:45, came home, was able to schedule the driving test for this morning and I just passed that about 45 min ago! On my first try! Whew! So happy and so glad it's done with! Good luck on your test! If you've been doing any of the online mock tests (I got a set of Disks in WH Smith from the AA) you'll do great!

I was worried though, my first minor was that I didn't know how to turn on the fog lights in our car! Ooops! But it all went well after that.

Wow!   :o  Congrats and congrats!!!!  :)   [smiley=balloon.gif]

I think the practical tests are booked out a ways (I don't remember where I saw it, but somewhere it said a month and a half out here in London......  :-\\\\ ), so think I'll have plenty of time between tests.

What did you do about lessons?  I certainly don't fall in the new driver category (I've been driving in the US for 12 years!) but I need lessons to learn the UK way of doing things...... but I'm not sure how many to plan on......

Again, congrats!   ;D

Congrats!!  :) I know what a relief it is to get that all taken care of! (just completed mine last month) How lucky to get your test in so quickly, I had to wait over a month for mine!! And that was after checking the booking system for cancellations everyday.. finally finding one that was sooner than my original two month out appointment! ::)

Travelfrog- I had been driving for about 11 years before taking my test here. Took one 1 hour AA lesson to make sure I was up to par on the driving here, and felt pretty confident with that. :) Probably different for everyone, but we really ran out of things to "work on" after about 20/30 mins in the vehicle and just spent most of the time driving the test route to familiarize with it..

Great!  Thanks, Blissful_Koala!

I was debating whether to take lessons near a test centre (traveling about an hour) to practise the test route or take them closer to home so it's more convenient....... if I might only need a few lessons, I guess it might be worth it to take lessons closer to the centre......  :)

I went with a 2 hour session from an AA instructor and then did a second 2 hour session. I think it depends on how much you have been driving here and if you want to test in a manual or automatic. I was going to do manual but then last night husband informed me (after I asked him if I should book the test and he said yes) that I'd have to arrange for a manual car (as we have an automatic) and you usually used your instructors car. So I showed up this morning in our automatic and tested in that instead.

I'd say take at least 2 hours of lessons to see what they think. They will adjust the lesson when they know you have experience. Had my driving test date been out farther I would have taken another 2 hours of lessons to do the manual test. They just teach manual cars so differently here. Of course, I learned to drive 30 years ago and maybe they teach it differently in the US now? No idea.

I have a sneaking suspicion my examiner was more... forgiving of faults? As I know I have some bad habits that should have probably showed up as faults. I dunnno. He seemed to be gazing out the window more than watching me. But maybe he wasn't....
