Bull Terrier / Pit Bull question for UK residents
« on: October 23, 2012, 04:53:12 AM »
So I am a new member, I live in the US, and just had a question that I am very curious about regarding Bull Terriers and Pit Bulls. I was watching the movie "snatch" (which takes place in the UK) the other night and I noticed that when one of the main characters walked into a dog fighting ring the majority of dogs were English Bull Terriers. IN NO WAY WHATSOEVER DO I CONDONE DOG FIGHTING, however it struck me as odd since Bull Terriers are fairly expensive dogs in the US, why would they be in a dog fighting ring? You can get a Pit Bull out here for probably about $100-$500, but my friend has a Bull Terrier and he had to shell out $1000. The miniatures are twice that. So my question is; are English Bull Terriers as common in the UK as Pit Bull Terriers are in the US?

I live in Glasgow and hardly ever see Bull Terriers.
However, I was offered a female bull terrier for free, outside the station one day.   :-\\\\

Round here it's staffy, staffy, staffy, akita, akita, staffy, staffy.

I always turn away at that scene in Snatch, so I dont remember the dogs being bull terriers, but I would say this is a good example of "don't judge the UK by what you see in the movies".   British men aren't all charming and courteous like Hugh Grant and Bull Terriers aren't a particularly common dog breed. :)

People in the UK use Staffordshire Bull Terriers for dog fighting and the "criminal underworld" often use them as guard dogs (check outside scrap yards or nightclubs). Also chav kids buy them, put a spiked collar on them and walk them around intimidating others - which is why they have such a bad reputation. Sadly this breed is not looked highly upon and as it is cheap £250-300 and widely available it is not first choice for those looking for a designer pooch.
