Anyone done the QLTS in recent years?
« on: April 10, 2013, 02:59:55 AM »
I'll be moving to Cardiff next August (2014) hopefully as a licensed attorney in the US.  Obviously the QLTS would be my next step, along with hopefully finding some sort of lower legal job in the meantime.  Has anyone taken the QLTS lately?  Also any estimates for a solicitor's pay in Cardiff? I tried looking on some of the average salary websites on this forum, but I couldn't figure them out.  I'm looking to do work with social/community care law, as I'll also be studying for my LLM in Social Care Law while in Cardiff prior to switching to a spouse visa. Thanks!

I found this resource that has recommended starting salary for a solicitor in Wales at £16,940.  But of course, they say the salary can vary widely depending on the size of the firm, qualifications, and specialization.

Salaries in general are lower in the UK than the US, with Wales being on the lower end of the salary scale as the cost of living in Wales if much lower.

I'd suggest the same source as KFdancer, but for legal jobs in the future, maybe the council:
https://jobs.cardiff.gov.uk/index.aspx

or specialist social care advocacy / legal advice services:
Maybe:
http://www.advocacymatterswales.co.uk/about-us/
or the professional organisations listed here?

Great.  Thanks for all the info.  Thankfully since I'm doing the LLM in the same field, I should be able to make some networking connections through that.  I'm also planning on trying to get an appointment when I'm visiting over Christmas just to chat with a community care solicitor I found in Cardiff, just to buy her a coffee and find out about practicing in the area.  Never hurts to make a connection.  Apparently she works with my future LLM tutor, so it seems like a good networking connection to make.
