See, I never thought it was a war thing. I wasn't weirded out by butter on sandwiches because my grandmother has done that my whole life. I always thought she was funny for doing that until I came here. Her mother is English and emigrated to the US around 1905, so when I came here, I thought she must have learned it from her English mother.
As to margarine, I like my own mother's philosophy. She once told me "if I'm going to have the fat, I may as well have the good stuff that tastes of something." Somehow that just made sense, and I don't touch margarine now.
