US property tax in the UK??
« on: May 09, 2013, 02:02:28 PM »
Hello! My husband ownes a townhome in the UK, and we thought it may be good to put my name on the deed, that way if anything happens to him, it's not difficult to live in my own house....also, might make its easier for the future settlement visa process to show we've comingled the asset...I'm at the beginning, only acquired entry clearance. Will this instigate US property taxes on my end? What do you guys think? Do you have other reasons why I might not want to do this?

You won't have any US property taxes because the house is in the UK, but you would have to deal with US and UK capital gains tax if you sell. If your husband is a non-US citizen you both need to understand that by co-mingling your assets he will have to deal with US taxes too. This might not result in any US tax, but it will result in many late nights Googling tax sites and probably some worry.
