Future Expat-hopeful...
« on: July 01, 2013, 07:02:05 PM »
So I figured I would take the chance to introduce myself and my tale of expat dreams.  Like many, I am a lifelong Anglophile/Britophile.  I have traveled to the UK several times, and one time brought back a lifelong souvenir (she'll be 13 this November).

I have always dreamed of making the move, and my husband is totally on board with that dream.  But, because we have moved several times in the last few years, we have promised my daughter that we will not move again until she is finished with High School (June, 2019).  She is unofficially a dual citizen (her father lives in Whitstable, Kent), and we are working towards having that citizenship formalized (a tad more complicated since her father and I were never married, but not impossible), so that when we plan to make the jump, since she will be a legal adult, she can join us if she chooses without issue.

As of right now, my husband has had several job offers, since his industry and area of expertise are evidently in high demand in England, so we are just hoping that the same will hold true a few years down the line so he'll have little problem getting sponsorship and a work visa when the time comes.

We also have the issue of my husband being in a wheelchair (t5-6 paraplegic).  He is fully independent, drives, etc.  But obviously, that will be of major concern when choosing an area to settle.

I look forward to getting to know the regular around here and I welcome any words of advice.

Just wanted to say "hi". I've been here (permanently) for 2 years so far and absolutely love it with not a single regret.

I don't really have any advice to give you, but I will say that Yorkshire, where I live, is absolutely beautiful. However, it is also the hilliest place I've ever seen. I do see people on motorized scooters and electric wheelchairs navigate these hills, but it scares me. I am always afraid they will roll backwards down the hill! (I don't know much about either forms of transport, obviously.) Perhaps your husband drives everywhere and this won't be an issue, but I thought I'd throw it out here. I had a bad accident years ago and even for me it is difficult to walk up these huge hills at times.

Lincolnshire is actually known for being 'flat', but unless your husband telecommutes with his work, then you'll probably move to the south or near a major city.

Anyway, welcome! :D

Well, she was an American girl, raised on promises.
She couldn't help thinking that there was a little more to life, somewhere else.
After all it was a great big world, with lots of places to run to.
And if she had to die trying she had one little promise she was gonna keep.
