Cost of cleaning person in the UK
« on: July 14, 2013, 05:46:05 PM »
I did a search and found some very old threads on this matter [before the economic crash!], but I'd just like to get an idea about how much it would cost to have a cleaner once we come over.  My MIL said it would cost about 7 pounds an hour, which is less than what I pay my cleaner here [$15 per hour], but I'm not sure how accurate that is for expensive areas. I know her sister, hubby's Auntie, does some cleaning up in East Yorkshire, but I'm not sure if prices vary from region to region.

Currently, I have a girl come for about 3-4 hours every week for my 4 bedroom, 1700 sq ft house. I have a spine injury, so I can't do toilets, tubs, or anything that requires getting down on my knees and bending forward.  Vacuuming too often is also hard.  We have a dog and a cat and 2 small kids and VERY bad allergies, so it's an absolute MUST.

I ALSO am wondering if anyone knows if a cleaner will generally use your supplies/cleaning method if asked? We use all natural cleaning systems with no harsh chemicals.  And our cleaner will help me tidy when she arrives if I need her to.

I know this is a special case because of my injury, but still it's all necessary for the most part in our case.  We gave up meat to afford a cleaner [and still be able to save for the move]. I'm already super worried about how I'm going to handle all the stairs that we'll likely have.

Thanks to anyone with experience or who can help!

We paid 10 Gbp an hour in London. She used our products and cleaned the way we asked her too. Pretty par for the course.

This may be apples-and-oranges, but 2 years ago i worked as a cleaner in an office building, and i was paid £7 per hour.

Sweet! I think we can handle that.  As long as it isn't too much more than we pay now.  My husband should be able to get around the same pay, and we are figuring the cost of living to be similar to what it is here [Atlanta, in town], except in London [but his pay would be higher there, so it should balance out, plus there won't be stairs in a flat, so I may need less help].

I pay £12.50 an hour which is on the high side (friends have someone for £8/hour).  Mine provides the cleaning products or will use my own.

I used to have a cheaper cleaner but in my case I have found that "you get what you pay for".

As a long time Nanny for a wealthy family before I got married [and since as well, I'm technically still their nanny], I can completely understand this problem.  There were many times the Mama had to let lazy, careless folks go.  We'd clean the [enormous McMansion--type] House ourselves for weeks until we found someone else who worked out. As a result, I vowed I would never live in a house big enough to require help, and never be too busy to attend fully to my children, or have them so overbooked that I needed help shuffling them about.  Now, though, my injury is worse and I'm eating my words, lol. I have my Dad living with us full time to help out and I have a cleaner.  I suppose I don't live in a house too big to clean myself, though, I just can't do much cleaning full stop.

I've never done this but I've lived in London long enough to know plenty of friends and acquaintances who have. Spending a few more pounds an hour sometimes makes the difference between someone reliable and someone who has plenty of free time in the afternoons for a reason.

This is so true!  I pay £12.00 per hour for a cleaner who runs a proper business (has insurance, two employees, and invoices her clients properly every month, accepting payment only into her business account) and she is the most reliable cleaner I have had in 10 years.  You can get them cheaper, but in my experience, it's worth a few extra pounds to pay for someone who cleans as a business, not as a cash-in-hand activity.  My £8.00 per hour cash-in-hand cleaner had a terrible habit of turning up when she felt like it, not when she'd agreed to...

I just paid £15/hour for end of tenancy deep cleaning - all insured - background checked, etc.    But that's not for normal cleaning, that was hardcore cleaning.  They'd be cheaper for normal cleaning, reckon £10-12/hour.  I didn't have the time, inkling, or energy to do it (I've got an autoimmune condition and I've been flaring up) this time upon moving out and I just sucked it up and paid it.  Still, they left it absolutely spotless and I didn't have to do it.  :D

With all the other things that need to be attended to when we move, it makes me happy to know our cleaner will be able to take care of that for us as well!  I shall have her come after we leave, and I'm also planning on hiring a landscaper to come and plant some bushes in where we currently have our vegetable garden, do a weed treatment, and do one last trim back of all the bushes etc.  I worked very hard to make the garden nice, but I know the landlord isn't going to want to deal with a rather large muddy hill back by the fence! And I trust my cleaner enough to supervise this for me.  I will be sad to leave my house and neighborhood, but at the same time, I'm excited to move and make new friends and get started on 'the rest of our life'.

I read the title and thought it was about how much it cost to take a shower!  ;D
