String Lights Project - Feasible or no?
« on: August 07, 2013, 07:56:53 PM »
Maybe there's someone on here with electrical knowledge who can either tell me this isn't going to happen, or let me know if it could.

I want to decorate my bedroom with globe string lights - these are patio/garden lights here in the States, and they are apparently unavailable in the UK.

The ones I want have a maximum bulb wattage of 7.0 watts, 10 bulbs per string. I've figured out that I need 5 strings of these to do what I'd like to in the bedroom.

Possible? What sort of converter/transformer?

Have you tried amazon? Some of these may fit the bill.

Stringing a whole bunch of US lights together and than using transformer doesn't sound too safe.

They are called "fairy lights" in the UK. You can find both battery operated ones (more common) and plug in ones all over the place - like amazon.co.uk, etcetera and they are fairly cheap.

There are lots of things hiding in the UK under a different name.

Thanks for the recommendations. I just really like these; the design is so clever:

I know it's not very sensible, but if there's a way to make it work with a transformer I'd be curious to know what sort I'd need.

You should be able to find a transformer in the appropriate wattage rating* to do what you want (with lights the frequency difference is irrelevant).

*In this case the lights would use 350 watts together (7 watts per bulb times 10 bulbs per string times 5 strings). As is usually recommended, you probably want a little leeway, so you might size the transformer up to 500 watts.

Thanks Kelly. That's the number I came up with too. I appreciate the input!
