Liverpool...Is a dog-friendly rental really impossible?
« on: July 26, 2013, 10:07:23 PM »
Hi everyone,

My husband and I are moving to the UK next month. Our relocation company has set us up with an agent to help us in finding a rental for the next three years. We were thinking that we would like to live in Liverpool (in the docks area) as there appear to be lots of newer apartment buildings and we like the area. However, our agent has flat-out dismissed the possibility and is, instead, steering us to Chester. I don't get the sense that she has actually checked on any properties in Liverpool, but I'm not sure and I'm hoping you guys can help. She wouldn't be the first person we've come in contact with on this relocation who has dismissed our wishes and instead "forced" Chester on us.

Ideally, we'd like to view pet-friendly places in both Liverpool and Chester to get a better sense of what we would prefer, but it seems she's not giving us that option. Any help is GREATLY appreciated!

For what it's worth, we have two small pugs (each under 20 lbs/9 kg)...They are both old and lazy and live in a city now, so we don't need to worry about grass, parks, yards, etc. :)

Thanks

Have you tried going on rightmove.com yourself and searching for properties that are dog friendly. We rent our two bedroom terraced just outside the city center of Liverpool (if it were vacant I'd offer it to you) and wouldn't say no to dogs.  I think your agent is just being incredibly lazy-

To be fair, Chester is a decent area but if you're looking for city life next to water than Liverpool is your best option. The flats by the docks are amazing! :D
We stole countries with the cunning use of flags. Just sail around the world and stick a flag in. "I claim India for Britain!" They're going "You can't claim us, we live here! Five hundred million of us!" "Do you have a flag …? "What? We don't need a flag, this is our home, you bastards" "No flag, No Country, You can't have one! Those are the rules... that I just made up!...and I'm backing it up with this gun, that was lent to me from the National Rifle Association."

Yes and strange though it may seem they both have a Costco in them.
I would definately go for Chester over Liverpool and I grew up in Liverpool.
I visited both places this month.

I found that a lot of the new build flats in city centres and trendy areas have a no pet policy for the entire building. It just isn't up to the landlord themselves in those flats.

Where will you be working? There's a bit of a commute between Chester and Liverpool!

We'll be working in a town between Chester and Liverpool....each are about 20 mins away. But, we'd prefer to live in more of a city :)

Keep in mind that Liverpool traffic is going to be hell. And chances are you may not be able to use a motorway the whole journey, which will double your commute time. I've found that sense of time for journeys in American mindsets sets you up for disaster driving here, as it always seems to take twice as long as it would have in the US (or my last country of residence, Switzerland), and it isn't always traffic that causes it.

Thanks....We'll be using public transportation from either location. Husb has already done this on multiple business trips in the past (well, from Liverpool...He never stayed in Chester).

Ah, ok, that does make it easier.

What about Manchester? It isn't a long commute from here, either.

Interesting. I thought I had been told that Manchester was a pretty far commute to where we will be working....But I will definitely look into it! We're heading out tomorrow night for our house hunting trip and have our fingers crossed that we can find somewhere pet-friendly in the city!

Thanks!

I totally agree with you about the sence of time in traveling in the UK.
I was in Liverpool a few weeks ago and I just sailed in in the tunnel and had no problem with the traffic but it was probably good timing on my part.
Cheers

It could be - not knowing what town you'll be working in, it is hard to say. There may not be a direct train line from here.

Good luck with your flat hunting!
