unmarried question
« on: October 22, 2004, 02:06:28 PM »
Hi there everyone!  I just want to ask this just to feel more calm about this.  As, you know, witing to getyour VISA is the scarriest thing to all of us and I know you all think heavily about your own situations and run every possibility and question through your head about a thousand times.
My girlfriend and I are going to go to the LA consulate to get the Unmarried couples VISA for me.  I am Scott, she is Amy.  We fit all the requirements, been together two years, have evidence (well most of it).

But my question that is running through my head right now (and I will try to ask this without offending anyone) is this particular VISA restricted to same sex relationships?  Is it easier if you're a gay couple?  Are we okay being in the relationship that we are in as a man and a woman who don't want to get married now because we feel we are too young?  Or will they find that just rediculous?

I am just wondering if it is exactly for what it says on paper?  For couples that have been living in a relationship akin to marriage for two years, and plan to stay together, etc.?  Or if I'm being naive (for lack of better words)?  Should I not be worrying about this?

Vote please!

Scott, don't worry.  It is for exactly what it says it is: a relationship akin to marriage, a living partnership.  You should have no trouble as long as you have all your documentation, etc.

Good luck.

Agreed.  My partner & I got it, no probs (I'm a she, he's a he :D) .

Up until about 2002 they used to require proof that couples applying for the UP visa were legally unable to get married (whether because they were same-sex, one partner was still married, etc.) - luckily thats no longer a requirement, and all you need to show is that you've been in a relationship 'akin to marriage' for two years.
