For those of you without a tumble drier...

We had racks in our kitchen when we bought the house but not on pulleys. Went on holiday and the house had a cooker with the pulley over it and it was amazing!! the kitchen pulleys were a nightmare, as clothes could pick up cooking odours.  My former MILs clothes always smelled of cabbage.

I think drying clothes in the kitchen would be a bad idea, for the reasons you mentioned. If we were to get one, I'd put it in the hall above the stairs.
