Crab apples?
« on: September 26, 2013, 06:30:57 PM »
A colleague gave me a bucket load of crab apples from her garden. The only recipe I can find online is crab apple jelly. Where do I buy jelly bags? Worried about making a complete mess.  :-X

Any other ideas?

Lakeland, maybe Wilkies, Barnitts in York

Oh memeroies of many a stomach ache from eating too many crab apples when someone at school brought them in!
Was just talking to DW about this the other day, how at school kids would bring in bags of gooseberries, or peas in the pod, or raw chestnuts and we'd just all be round them wanting some!

I bought some gooseberries recently and a couple of days later DW said "are you going to make something with those gooseberries?" and I told her I'd eaten them!
"We don't want our chocolate to get cheesy!"

What's the difference between a crab apple and any other apple?
My friend just gave me a big bag of small red apples from her tree, and they are lovely and sweet.  For some reason, 'crab' apples sound to me  like they'd be sour?

Yeah, crab apples are more tart than other apples, but you can use them like regular apples in recipes - probably needing to add more sugar.

Most of the crab apples were bruised, so a  no go, but has inspired me to get back into baking this autumn and using the virgin slow cooker for apple butter. Good on French toast!  [smiley=2thumbsup.gif]
