Hi all, I'm moving in a few weeks to Harrogate. I've never been to England and I'm trying to get things sorted out. My housing and car is already figured out so I'm looking for info on the smaller things:
- Using my laptop, xbox, electric razor
- Choosing a cell phone service with data so I can have GPS
- Finding out if my unlocked carrier free iphone 5 will work out there
- Setting up internet to watch my slingbox that is set up in the US
- Learning where to buy clothes, shoes, food, and other small essentials
My name is Joe, I'm 27, and I'm coming over with no one else but myself
It'll be an 11 month trip and I couldn't be more excited
Your laptop will work here. You just need a converter plug. I got mine for $5 and it came with plugs for all over the world. You don't need a transformer since the little box on you power cord will convert the power to something like 19 volts. The xbox I am not sure of.......if it runs on 110-220v you just need an adapter plug. If it is only 110v you will need a step down transformer. Electric razors I would just buy a new one in the UK They are easily fried.
Cell phones are hard to get. My Hubby had to get another phone in his name so I could have one since I had not been here for 3 years. We have Vodafone and they were the cheapest per month for what I wanted.
The Iphone should work fine out here.
Setting up the internet was rather easy. MY DH was able to do it and normally I do all that stuff. However we were just transferring over his mum's virgin tv account to us and adding internet. So maybe someone else can clarify this if yolu are a brandnew customer.
Shopping is something you will have to get into on your own. With several supermarkets (Asda, Tesco, Aldi, Morrisons, Lidl, Iceland etc) we usually shop at 2-3 to get the best prices on certain things. Clothing depends on what type you are looking for and your price range. I get my everyday run around things (leggings, tights, t-shirt to lounge around in) from primark. And get anything that I want to last a bit longer from Next. I did this every time I visited and I still have everything I ever bought in Next. Shoes I go to Schuh or the market in town as they have lots of lovely shoe stores. Other small essentials like shampoos, soap, medicine etc. i get from superdrug or home bargains. And use B&M for household items (pots, pans, storage units and Beer, it is super cheap there and a great selection).
