American living in Sweden, possible UK move
« on: September 04, 2013, 09:28:32 AM »
Hi all!
I am Lauren (28), native NY'er, raised in South Florida and somehow ended up living in Southern Sweden, Malmö! Life is crazy! I've been abroad for 7 years so I am kinda an expat lifer but I am thinking about making the jump across the pond (the little one). :D Malmö's attitude to cycling is very serious, definitely on the caliber of Amsterdam and Copenhagen and I would like to find a place in the UK, if possible that has a similar vibe. Not sure if that is possible but I posted another thread about that on another board on this site. It seems so strange but I am actually more nervous about thinking about moving then I was when I first moved 7 years ago!!!! Truth is I've grown comfortable in my simple Swedish life but I crave more. I am nervous to move away from what I've grown accustomed to but I like challenges too ;)

Did you get to see Eurovision in May? So wanted to go!

Have you looked here about UK cycling and cities?

Hope you find a place you enjoy.

Welcome to UK-Y!

MLG  :)

I know it is prying, but isn't Sweden a really great place? I have a secret jones for Scandinavia...
I just hope that more people will ignore the fatalism of the argument that we are beyond repair. We are not beyond repair. We are never beyond repair. - AOC

Sweden has this great global brand and perception but its not necessarily for everyone.  Sure its clean and the people are decent and speak English, but man is it dull after a while.  I have a Swedish partner and even HE doesn't want to move home.  There are some other weird cultural idiosyncrasies as well that really don't become apparent until you have lived there a bit.

Lauren - are you over on the expat board Amerikanska?

Re: places to live in the UK - are you looking for a major city or something similar in size to Malmo?  I wonder if Bristol would be a good fit - uni town, near the coast, its easy and accessible but I have no knowledge of the cycling scene.  Pretty much nowhere in the UK will you find the racks of bike parking as you do in Scandi.  London now has the temporary bike rental situation, but there are (sort of) dedicated cycle lanes that are shared with buses, etc.  It may come down more to where you are able to get a job than if the city has cycling facilities.

Malmo is a great town (spent quite a bit of time in Lund myself...), but I agree that its possible to get a little too comfortable in Sweden and then you wake up 5 years later and wonder if life is passing you by!
