In 1958 Dr. Ake Senning implanted the first heart pacemaker.
Pacemakers regulate irregular heartbeats by sending mild electrical
pulses to the heart muscle. They have proven to be safe,
effective, and reliable. Today two hundred and fifty thousand
people receive pacemakers every year, and modern versions are very
small and have many advanced capabilities. The man who received
the first pacemaker is still alive and well.
