Job Interview - Credit Check
« on: September 27, 2013, 05:53:10 PM »
Hi all -

I apologize in advance if there is any other recent thread covering this topic.

I have a job interview on Monday with a bank. They have stated that job applicants will be offered a position upon successful completion of the interview process and credit check.

I moved to the UK on my spouse visa at the end of August 2013. I have no credit in the UK. I do have a council tax bill, a bank account that I opened today, a National Insurance number, and other mail with proof of my address.

My credit in the US is not the greatest. I doubt I'd get the job based on it.

Is there a way that they can check my credit in the US? I will go to the interview no matter what, but I'm just curious if they will have the ability to run my US credit.

Thanks for any input :)

I would think you would have to give them authority for an international credit check for them to be able to do this. Do you have any records of any authorisations you gave them?

I haven't seen anything about it in the paperwork..they just ask for a past 3 years of residences and employment history.

I have great references and a solid work/education history..I'm hoping that will be more important than years old debts from when I had no health insurance and had to pay medical bills with a credit card I couldn't afford :(

Hmmm...  I bet you are safe from a US credit check as they would need your social security number.

But they may ask questions and you'll want to be honest.  A bank's concern with your credit is that if you have a high debt to income ratio, you could be a risk around cash.  If the debts are old and discharged, I don't think it would be a concern even if it was in country.
