Things to see in Brussels
« on: November 14, 2004, 11:49:23 AM »
My husband and I are going to Brussels for a short break next weekend.

Does anyone have any recommendations on what to see while there? Where to eat, etc?

Also interested in any delicious chocolate shop recommendations, as I will be sending packages home for xmas, :)

Thanks for any input.

Most tourists stop to see Manneken Pis, but many don't know about his counterpart, Jeanneke Pis.  She's tucked away in a little alleyway (dead end) off Rue des Bouchers.

Bruges is fairly close and easy to get to by train, so might be worth a visit.
I tool this pic when I went there (from Brussels) a few years ago.

Do you like seafood?    I remember quaint back streets in Brussels with loads of lovely seafood restaurants - quite a job to choose which to choose but we found a good 'un ... also a metro / tube / subway system crowded out with aromatic Belgians.   Too long ago / too fuzzy in my mind to give you names / locations, but I can promise you'll have a memorable trip. Enjoy!

Rue des Bouchers has loads of restaurants, many of them seafood.  We were there in Sept 2001 and most places had their tables out and seafood on display.

Thanks for all of the information so far. I absolutely adore seafood and chocolate, so this looks to be a terrific decision--thanks to the Telegraph's BOGOF promotion with Eurostar.

Just wondering, what's with the peeing statues? Are they of some significance, if so, what? TIA

Is it just me that feels that a name like "bog off" is singularly appropriate for a travel promotion?  I wonder if the originator saw anything funny in it?

Glad to see you back jenninberks!

I was in Brussels last spring for a conference and the traffic was TERRIBLE.  Traffic jams everywhere!  My advice is to stay away from buses, taxis and cars

I was in Brussels for a short time and had a blast - great food & BEER!  And do go see at least the peeing boy - he's big there!  The central square is gorgeous.
