Good experience with USPS
« on: November 02, 2013, 03:46:02 PM »
I had more than an extra suitcase of items (snow coats, boots, heavy sweaters) I wanted to send over to England.  My box was 18" x 18" x 25" and weighed 45lbs.  The cost of the extra baggage (on BA) was $170.  I would have had to purchase an extra suitcase and it is unlikely that my items would have fit even with the vacuum bags.  The cost was $171 and arrived in one week.  The box arrived looking almost untouched.
My only issue was that my particular USPS clerk couldn't figure out how to insure the shipment when it bore "no value" on the customs form.  It comes with about $220. automatic insurance and I just accepted that.

I am looking to do the post office option now I think - did you have to fill out anything special for the clothing? FedEx was telling me I have to fill out a "country of origin" form and have it notarized. What???? I was also looking at pricing on the USPS site and it looks to be about half the price of FedEx - I think I am going to rethink the direction I am going.... Thank you in advance.

I don't even know what the "country of origin" form is so I'd say no, I didn't do that.  I just filled out the customs form.  Again, I didn't insure it, but I that was due to the incompetence of my clerk.  I also looked at FedEx and UPS and USPS was cheaper by half for both of them.

Best of Luck!
