I would like to start an online book club
« on: January 25, 2014, 12:02:08 PM »
Hey everyone, I just moved to the UK on 19 Dec 2013 and am just settling in. I love to read and wanted to know if anyone would like to start a book club and we can chat online about the book we are reading. I saw that there are book clubs where people are meeting up in London, Yorkshire, Oxford and other places but I'm in Gloucester. I am open to many books but I seem to be more drawn to mysteries, romance and thrillers. I need to meet new people here and make some friends and I think this is a good way to start. Let me know if any of you are interested.

What about going to your local library to start one in the area of reading subjects you enjoy:

http://www.gloucestershire.gov.uk/libraries/readinggroups

Or there's these two in your area:

http://www.meetup.com/Longlevens-Book-Club/

http://www.meetup.com/DReaders/

Or you could use your love of reading to find volunteering options:

http://www.do-it.org.uk/

Getting active in your local community might help you settle better with the transitions and changes to such a big move.

Hope you find something you enjoy in your area! Have fun!

MLG  :)

In my experience, library book groups are ... bleh. They tend to attract a lot of older retired people, which is all fine, but I prefer a mix of ages in my book groups. Also, most (all I've had experience with) don't let readers choose their own books. The library orders x number of copies of whatever book they decide on. So you don't have much say in what you read.

I'd have a look at the meetup reading groups and if those don't suit you, start your own! I've started two since moving to the UK and both have been really successful!

I'd like to join your on-line group but I already belong to three book groups and don't think I can handle another one!

But best of luck with it all!  :)

Thanks so much to both of you. I ended up finding a website where I can make my own book club and also join other's clubs. I think I will join one or two and continue to find people to add to mine. I am currently reading The Count of Monte Cristo but I'm already 1/4 of the way through it.
I know many people are already in so many clubs now but for any future readers of this post, this is the website of my book club: http://www.my-bookclub.com/bookclub/book-club-for-all/

:)

By the way, chary, I like your photo blog!

Hi LL,
It's probably not what you're after but have you have heard of LibraryThing? http://www.librarything.com/home#

I've been in it for years but only recently have I joined in the numerous groups they have on there. It's meant my reading has taken off in 2014 and I have read more books in one month than I did all last year :)
The groups section is here http://www.librarything.com/groups There are several groups which have monthly reads and discussions as well.

I belong to LibraryThing too, LL. It's brilliant! I mostly hang out in the Persphone and Virago Modern Classics groups - in fact, I've made quite a few friends (real life ones!) that way!

 :D

It's only recently I have become more active in the groups. I'm mainly hanging around in the 2014 Category Challenge group and the ROOTs group. They have really helped me get back into reading (and switch off the internet for a while!) and meet some like minded folks. It's also helping me get some books read which I have had for years...waiting... :)
