Do 8 month old babies use "baby blankets"?
« on: December 10, 2013, 03:02:04 PM »
Okay, I know next to nothing about babies.  I have a friend with an 8 month old for whom I'd like to buy a Christmas gift.  I have another friend who recently started selling hand crocheted and knitted baby blankets. I realize that people of all ages use blankets to sleep, but I associate these hand crocheted and knitted blankets with infants.

Do you think something like what I described would be appropriate for an 8 month old?  (I'd give a small toy as well.) I'd love to be able to support my friend's business at the same time as giving a gift to my other friend.

Yes and No.

I am pretty sure the current guidelines for babies is not to let them sleep in their cots with loose blankets as they could pose a risk.  That said, I know my two girls have had lovely crocheted blankets from their grandmother since birth and we have used them when going out for walks in the stroller or cuddling on the sofa. Now my girls are older they have turned into their comfort blankets and they have to sleep with them every night and bring them away when they go to somewhere overnight.

So while the baby may not use it to sleep with right away, I think it's a really lovely and thoughtful gift.

Thanks for your response!

Ah! So the mother may not use it in the crib, but could use it while holding him, or in the pram, etc.  I never thought about the loose holes, etc. posing a risk while sleeping.  :o See, I said I knew nothing about babies. Shameful, really.  :-X

Thank you!

Does she crochet other things as well? Just asking because my son has a TON of blankets and there's no way he uses all of them. I feel bad because they were made/given with love and he pretty much ignores them all (he's 15 months). Of course, you never know what your child can become attached to, and his blanket love could change. Just thinking if she makes sweaters or hats then maybe that would be a better gift? I would love if someone would make my son a hat or some gloves!

Hmmm. Good idea. I don't know what my friend's (the mother's) blanket situation is, either. I know she doesn't have much family, so don't know if a lot of people gave her blankets, etc. I will ask my crocheting friend about other items (I know she makes crocheted owl toys).  Thanks for the idea! :)

I'm a bit out of practice as my son is an adult, but I associate blankets with newborns. I agree with CCG re a hat/gloves type gift, esp at this time of year. :)

You do not have an adult son! You look about 25 in your pic. :)

I use blankets every day with my seven month old. Babies do sleep with blankets, you just aren't advised to put lots of blankets in.  You aren't going to leave them in the cold--although those sleeping bags for babies are better as they don't kick them off or go over the heads. Even if I don't use one at night though, I put her under a blanket every time I put her in the car seat or in her pushchair. If it's a nice blanket, I would think it's appreciated.  I just wouldn't give her a tiny receiving blanket.

My baby blanket was ruined by mice in storage when I was a teenager, but had used it constantly until about a year before that.  I still have the crocheted blanket my birth mother made me for my 13th birthday and my step mother's mum made me a "baby" blanket when she made my baby brother one....I was 18.  I still use it everyday.  To me crocheted blanket are better than regular blankets.  If your friend doesn't have many family members to do that for, I think a blanket would be a lovely gift.  The baby and the mother will cherish it for years.  Also the owl is a cute idea as well.

This child is going to need a Security Blanket -- so the more to choose from the better!  My mum had to cut my fave blanket in half so she could have one spare in the wash without causing traumas  ;)
