Best way to transfer Uk saving account to US?
« on: December 16, 2013, 05:55:59 PM »
I tried to do a search for this but nothing came up. Does any one know the most cost effective way to do this?

                          Thanks! Clueless

Will depend on how much you are transferring.

Some options are Paypal, xe.com, and a wire transfer through your bank.

When I did this US to UK I found that the cheapest way was just to just go through my bank. Either way you're going to pay out the wazoo, but I found the bank to be my safest, cheapest (and, frankly, easiest) option.
For what it's worth I was transferring something like $20,000. I'm sure it depends on how much you're trying to transfer and between what banks.

We did an electronic transfer via our bank to our US checking account. Then, once we got to the US we moved the money around. If it cost us anything, which I'm not certain it did, it cost 30 euro.

It depends on the amount.

We transferred over 5,000GBP so we used xe.com

There was no fee charged and the exchange rate was really competitive. They said it would take up to 7 days to transfer funds,  but it took less than 48 hours.

I was very skeptical about it at first, but we have transferred money with it twice now and it has been awesome! We check with our bank and paypal first and we always end up with more money via xe.com.

There is a minimum transfer rate for the free service though (It may be around 2500 GBP? I forget).

When we first transferred money from US>UK I used our banks Santander > Llyods and it took a week and I got fees from both banks and they didn't give me what the exchange rate would be until after the money transferred. It sucked.

We've used xe.com several times for transfers in each direction.  Excellent experience, but I know there are a number of equally good options, as reported on this board.
