Overwhelmed with packing!
« on: January 26, 2015, 08:32:29 PM »
Someone just tell me I'm going to figure it out! And that everything will work out fine.

I'm going crazy trying to figure out what to pack for myself and my two kids (5 years old) between:
a) what we can take on the plane with us to have right away and
b) what will be shipped over with UPak and arrive a month or so later and
c) what to get rid of and replace over there.

We can take with us 1 checked suitcase (I got duffels) up to 50 pounds, 1 carry-on suitcase and 1 personal bag each, so 3 big duffels, 3 carry-on cases, and 2 personal bags (mine is my purse). This *seems* like a lot, but I know I will run out of room and I have to stop saying, "oh, that needs to come in a suitcase with us."

So far, I know one suitcase will be my clothes, one will be their clothes, and one carry-on suitcase will be toys.

I've read through the "things you wish you knew" and "things you wish you had/hadn't brought with you" threads, but omg, I don't see how I'm going to get this done alone with 2 kids driving me batty!

UPak is coming Feb 9, so I have to have it all figured out by then!

Any advice, suggestions from BTDT folks?

Tough when you've got the two kids to plan for.  Don't panic. Just be sure you have the toys and snacks for the kids (and all your paperwork, passports, etc.) and the rest will sort itself out.  Deep breath.

We did this and I still haven't shipped over the rest of our stuff.  We moved with two suitcases, a medium Home Depot box, a duffel, and two other carryons (and two cats but they were a different issue).

What I did since we had a large enough house was to set up one room that was the Packing Room so I could see what I had set aside.  So the luggage I knew we were taking was in there, and while I packed up the rest of the house, I would move things into that room that I thought I would want/need right away on the trip over,  By having the separate room I could see immediately how much I had, how much space, not misplace stuff, etc.  I could also think on what I had chosen and always go back and swap things in and out while I was packing up the rest.

For the rest of our stuff we set up the bigger boxes in the basement - kitchen extraneous, sports, non-needed clothes, etc which, while it wasn't fun running up and down the stairs all the time, again gave me a place where I could make a mess and pack stuff and sort without tearing up the whole house.  It also allowed us to start selling our furniture from the first floor without people crawling all over boxes.

What you could also do is tape out the space of the container you are shipping.  My mother used to do this on our very long haul moves to Alaska, so she could see the exact space.

Our method worked pretty good, although we were still up at 3 am throwing things out and packing the U-Haul, but it was fairly low stress.  Granted, I did have a bit longer than you, but it was a divide and conquer strategy!  Now all our stuff is in my parent's basement waiting for this summer when we can hopefully finally UPak it to the UK, but its all ready to go for the most part.

THIS. I wish I could do this! We're in a little apartment now and I don't have the space to do this. I have seriously considered selling my bed and sleeping on the couch for the next month so I could use my bedroom as the staging area. SIGH.

When I moved with my then three-year-old (he's 23 now), we only took what we could fit into two suitcases and two carry-ons. We had one suitcase of toys and the other of cold weather clothes (we are from Texas). Our carry-ons had coloring books and snacks and I had documents and photos. Everything else I owned was sold so I moved nothing. When I returned to the U.S. nine years later, I had a husband, and three children. We sold all our stuff again so we also arrived with the same items: clothes, toys, snacks, documents. I will be returning with my husband to the UK in the future so you'll bet we would be doing exactly the same thing. Good luck!

This might not be a bad idea.  It sometimes takes longer to sell used furniture than one would like.  Might as well get on with it.
