NRA spouse e file
« on: January 19, 2014, 03:19:23 PM »
Hello
I have been filing paper forms and writing NRA in
My english spouses ssn section. I have tried to do this online
With taxslayer and it won't accept it.
Anyone have this same issue.

I heard we weren't allowed to file by paper anymore ?
Thanks

I know nothing about the software you are using; but unless you a US citizen tax professional preparing more than 10 returns each year you can still file the return and claim such things as refundable child credits each year by filing on paper if you wish.  FBARs must be filed online; but US income tax returns can be still be filed on paper.

You would be a few days too early to file for 2013 in any case; plus the IRS haven't yet published their unofficial exchange rate.

I think they have!

but they will also not be dealing with any returns until February because of the shutdown last year.

Your problems filling in the form with NRA may be because they are expecting a TN (tax number). We had to obtain one of these for my husband a few years ago. As Guya says, you can certainly file on paper, but whether you can put NRA into the downloaded fill-in-able forms I'm not sure.

Sorry,  Guya, I have just noticed that you posted the news about the publication of the exchange rate :-[

Is that rate different from the rate you refer to in your post here?

I've completed my return online through taxslayer and put
123-00-0000 as hubby's ssn. So will see what happens
I am not expecting any refund.

I think the link above is for FBAR reporting as it is the Treasury exchange rate on Dec 31st.  It looks like the IRS have now published their average rates for the year
