Accommodation letter
« on: January 26, 2014, 07:44:20 PM »
Hi All,
I'm getting all of our paperwork together to file for a spousal visa in March. My husband is a UK citizen living with me here in the US. Our son has dual citizenship. Since we are both here, my in-laws will be writing to say that we will be living with them since we cannot get a house or flat before we move. I would like to know if someone has a copy or an example of what my mother in law will need to say on her letter. I have asked for copies of their council tax statement as well as Mortgage letter as well. Please let me know if there is anything I'm missing as far as accommodation is concerned.
Thank you!
Elsa

I can't recall any templates/examples of what one would write in this type of letter, but something that came to mind was that you may need to include something to say that the arrival of your family would not lead to overcrowding within the home.

For England's definition of overcrowding, see this link: Overcrowding.  I think Scotland may have its own rules as far as this goes, though.  So I'm not sure where you're headed, but the relevant Shelter site would likely point you in the right direction.

All the letter needs to state is:

- that they are giving you permission to live in the house with them
- that they own the house
- that the home will not be overcrowded with you living there too.

It can also include information about any monetary contributions you will make to the household, such as if you will be paying any rent or contributing towards bills.

As well as the letter, they also need to include:
- their land registry document or deed
- their last few original mortgage statements, if they have a mortgage.

You do not need to send any council tax bills.

Thank you ladies! I find myself having a hard time navigating the UKBA website for information like this. I searched on here and found different suggestions so again, many thanks for the responses :)
