Hi All,

I am a San Franciscan that just arrived a week ago. My boyfriend and I have been in a bi-coastal coastal relationship for the past 3.5 years. We both flew back and forth to see one other every few months. Just a week ago we were finally able to fly together. I know that this sounds as if it's not a big deal, however, we've never actually flown anywhere together - all of our trips were to/from the US/UK to see one another. It was a "monumental" trip to say the least - leaving the States and starting our lives together. So, long story short - 10 or so trips to/from the UK/US and we are finally together.

I have travelled quite a bit for work and pleasure so I've been in the UK many times prior to meeting my Fiance. Although little surprises me when it comes to cultural differences, I am enjoying seeing things from a residential perspective. We intend on settling down here in the UK, starting a family and living full lives. I have arrived on a Fiance visa, so I am in the midst of planning our wedding details and getting everything sorted as far as that's concerned. Looking forward to my things arriving from the states because it will feel a bit more like home once I can see my things and sleep in my own bed........I just hope the movers are able to get my big American Queen Sized bed up our tiny stairs, otherwise we'll be in a pickle, so to speak.

Since I am not able to work until we've gotten my spousal visa, I am going to try and find some things to occupy my time, outside of unpacking and "nesting." I was thinking of maybe taking some cooking classes - I love to cook, but I don't expect to have access to everything that I did in the Bay Area, so I am looking forward to learning how the Brits cook. Any other suggestions of things to do in my spare time would be appreciated!  :)

I hope to meet other fellow Americans to learn where to find some American items that I just feel as though I can't do without. One of them being American style pickles. I didn't realize that this was such a big problem. I thought that I was the only one that noticed, however, after reading some of the boards here, I see it's a big deal to many Americans. I just love pickles for snacks, but I crave a Mt. Olive or Claussen or Vlassic type pickle badly - hopefully I will be able to find something like that in my searches.

That's all that I will type for now. Would be nice to meet some other fellow Americans and hear their ideas of what to do with lots of free time while their spouse, or spouse to be, is at work during the day.

Cheers!

Welcome to UK-Y, Madge!  :)

Like you, I arrived on a fiancée visa.  In total, I was in the UK for 11 months before my FLR(M) was granted and I was able to volunteer and seek employment.

Another forum member asked a similar question last summer, here: http://talk.uk-yankee.com/index.php?topic=79911.0

I'd highly recommend getting to know your local area as best you can -- getting the lay of the land should help you with feeling settled.
2011 -- Fiancée visa granted
2012 -- Moved to UK, married, applied for FLR(M)
2013 -- FLR(M) granted

Whereabouts in the UK are you living?

As for pickles, M&S do the good ones, they're very expensive though.  I make do with the Aldi ones, only 79p and aren't too bad, still have sugar in though!

Welcome!

I remember the first (and so far only) flight my now husband and I got to do together from US to UK when I moved here first on a student visa...it was a nightmare with delayed flights and losing economy comfort (his poor freakishly long legs) and it was still my favorite flight ever because we got to arrive together! It's such a great feeling isn't it?

Good luck with the wedding planning. I'm sure it will be a magical day :)

And I totally feel you on the pickles...I've heard of some apparently great M&S imported pickles..but I've tried a few stores with no luck :( I was buying some Mrs. Elswood sandwich slices (I think) that were good enough...but I'm mostly just skipping the pickles these days.

Welcome Madge!

Hello from a fellow Cali gal (San Diego). I'm waiting for my pending visa application to be approved and to make the big move over there. I can totally relate to your excitement about flying together. I haven't had that opportunity yet, but look forward to it! Has the moving company given you an estimated time for your belongings to arrive. I bet your bed will be a welcome relief :) I'm debating whether to ship my bed, but I don't think I could do without it.

I agree with the others- getting to know your area will help you assimilate. Depending on where you live, I suggest joining some groups (try meetup.com), check out some of the historical landmarks, have a pint in a local pub and people watch etc.. :)
