How to find private paediatric allergist
« on: March 05, 2014, 03:44:08 AM »
A bit silly, but...
We've been fine and satisfied (not necessarily happy :/) with using the nhs. However, it's taking almost 6 months from first gp appointment to our finally scheduled allergy testing at end of April. I'd love to just enquire at a private practice (we have private insurance) to see if I can get a test sooner for my 1-1/2yo, but have no idea how to go about even finding one! Any tips? When I search online some bupa place in London comes up, but surely there's someone in Reading or Basingstoke? Or maybe not... Any help appreciated! Thanks!

My insurance website is a bit useless like that and I always have to call them for a doctor outside major cities. Good luck.

You will probably find that most "private" physicians are NHS physicians.

What going private (often) will do is reduce the wait times.  So you'll see the same physician but shouldn't have to wait for referrals and wait lists.

The Portland will have all types of specialists for women and children.  Check with your insurance, as some require a referral from the NHS and some just let you book on your own.  If you need a referral, just call your surgery and they may just give you a letter since you have already been seen.

Dr. Adam Fox - He is based in London, but he is one of the top specialists in the field.  We saw him for our then 1 year old.  We also went private and the wait was significantly less.

I will say that I have heard that there just aren't very many pediatric allergist specialists, so traveling around may be your only option if you can't find one locally that will see you privately.

Dr Adam Fox also has clinics at Spire Hospital in Bushey, Herts, just over 1 hour's drive away from you, and perhaps easier than going into London?

Edited to add:

BMI The Princess Margaret Hospital in Windsor, Berks has 2 consultants who treat children. I suggest doing a search for private hospitals within your desired area and searching for consultants in allergy medicine.

Good luck! I know how hard it is to have sick children and wish I'd had the benefit of private insurance when my children were little.
