Crate questions
« on: January 15, 2014, 05:23:33 PM »
Can we put toys or bones to keep the dogs busy during the flight?

Also, what are the recommended type water bottles/food bowls?

Thanks!

Yes you can, I brought my dog over in October and put a couple of chew toys and her blanket in with her.
As far as water/food bowls, you would use the ones that come with your crate, they clip on to the inside of the door. What I did was freeze the water in the container and then clipped it on at the airport.
You can't use a "loose" bowl as it would bounce around in the crate in flight/turbulence.  :)

It's possible that different airlines have different rules, so do check with yours!

When we flew our cats over with VA we weren't allowed to have any toys or "loose" items aside from a blanket in their cages. Also they weren't even allowed to wear their collars just in case they got snagged on something.

So I would check with the airline first.  :)

Thanks guys!

Guess I'll check with BA for the bones question.

Good idea about the frozen water. I'll have to do that.

We are moving 3 dogs and 1 cat and it's going to cost a fortune so I don't want to get it wrong when I get to the airport and have to change all of our tickets and make it even more costly. This site has been so helpful with all the details. The .gov site is amazingly nonspecific and nowhere near as detailed as defra was. So I'm happy to have all the help.

When I flew my cat over, I had her blanket and an old tshirt of mine that was always in her crate when I took her to the vet.  When I got to the airport, they made me remove the blanket and the tshirt.  I also had food and frozen water in the bowls, which they made me remove.

I was told all that was allowed in the crate was a wee wee pad.  They fed and watered her in the airport, but removed it before the flight.  So make sure you check with your airline.

As soon as she landed and got to the ARC, she was removed from her crate and given food and water.  The person at manchester pets on jets assured us that no harm is done by keeping the food and water from them during flight, and actually is better so our furry family has less chance to get sick.

Good Luck!!!

Check out dryfur.com - they have some great packages put together including dry pads in case of accidents and water/food bowls that attach to the front.  I hate sounding like such a shill for a company, but I was impressed with their product.  One of our cats couldn't hold it for 12 hours and used the pad, but I had no idea that had happened (no smell!) until I looked closer a few days later.
