Moving from Minneapolis, MN to the UK in May (hopefully)
« on: March 12, 2014, 07:55:15 PM »
I've accepted a position at the University of Warwick (in IT) and am currently going through the Tier 2 application process.  Warwick has issued a Certificate of Sponsorship, and is A-rated, so I think I meet all of the requirements.   There seems like a million little things to think about (from taxes to cell phones), and I'm just starting to sort through it all.

My biggest question for the community has to do with bringing my partner with me.  I know that the Tier 2 Visa has a provision for dependents, but there are two things which complicate my situation: 1) Due to job commitments, my partner can't come over until September.  And 2) We want to get married before I leave.

Anyone have any advice?

I'm not sure those things are complications, to be honest. Your situation sounds pretty normal to me.

Firstly, it shouldn't be a problem for you to apply for your partner's visa after yours, once you are in the UK. So, that shouldn't be much of a complication at all - you would just need to follow the instructions for applying when you are already in the UK.

Secondly, if you are married, then it will be easier for your partner to get a dependant visa than if you are not married. If you aren't married, then she would have to apply as an unmarried partner... which means she would need to prove you have lived together for 24 consecutive months before applying for the visa (tenancy agreements, utility bills, evidence of both living in the same house as a couple for the last 2 years etc.), but if you are married, all you need to show is the marriage certificate.
